County Boys Championship 2020

RUSHMORE GC - 18 August 2020

Boys Champion – Jake Moore Ferndown GC

This year’s Boys Championship got under way at Rushmore with a course presented to the players in great condition.  The weather started off with some cloud and sunny intervals along with a few showers thrown in for good measure.

That said the showers left us by late morning and in the main it was a very pleasant day for golf.  We had a good field of 35 youngsters all hoping to be the 2020 champion.

During the first round as the results came in scoring was proving tough with no one breaking par.  Mannie Wellman Jenson Bull and Gus Moxon held the lead for a while with 75's.  Tom Bastow and Oliver Griffiths had 72's but the morning belonged to Jake Moore Ferndown who had a fine one under par 70 to hold the half way lead.  Last year’s winner Jacob was well off the pace with 79 and Alex Johnson was five off the pace.  The handicap cup was being led by Jake with a net 68 with Ben White, Tom Bastow and Gus Moxon all tight on his heels with 69's.

Having been duly fed and watered they returned to the course for the second round with scoring in the main proving to be better for most than the morning round.  The main Championship was being played out within the last three groups.  group.  Jake found himself 3 over at the turn whilst Alex was 1 under.  Others were hanging in but Alex then birdied the tenth and eleventh to go to 3 under.  Alex then triple bogied twelve to go back to level but then went par, birdie and eagle to pull it back to 3 under.  Jake to his credit battled hard and picked up birdies in the thirteenth and fifteenth before parring home to finish one over fort the last eighteen and level overall.  Alex finished his round with all pars which left him coming in on a fine 3 under par 68 but one off the pace with a total of 143 giving Jake his first Boy's title.  Which was further enhanced when he also took the Handicap title as well on 4 under par two clear of Oliver Park who too second place on two under pipping Jenson Bull, Oliver Griffiths and Ben White on countback.

The day belonged to Jake Moore who was crowned the 2020 County Boys Champion.
