So we were at Dudsbury once more for the 2018 Open in what was being hailed as the hottest Bank Holiday on record. The course was in excellent condition given the winter we have had here and that is great credit to the Greens staff that has done a great job in getting the course prepared. The only slight disappointment was the entry which was down on previous years and once more there is a lack of Professionals willing to compete.
The first round saw some great golf and there was some “not so great!” The best morning round belonged to Tom Robson who last year turned to the Professional ranks. Tom had a stunning 64 which consisted of 7 birdies and 11 pars. By all accounts it could have been even better? So Tom was way out in front after the first round with Ferndown’s Bradley Gyte next at level par. Defending Champion Lee James had a 73 but was struggling after an unexpected problem and call into work during the early hours. Others hoping for a great afternoon were Brad Cox 72, Ryan Moody 72 and Harrison Pake also 72.

The scoring for some was a lot better in the afternoon Ryan Moody Stoneham went one better 71 for a 143 total and the clubhouse lead. Jon Bevan had a 1 under 70 to put him into the prizes on 145. Previous champions Andy Rideout had a super 69 to finish level and take the lead and with the rumours coming back that Tom was not having such a good afternoon my attention went to a playoff perhaps! Thankfully Tom managed to par his last to take the Open title by one with a second round 77 giving him a 141 total for the two rounds. Phew!!
So Tom managed to take the Dorset Open in his first outing as Professional many congratulations to him and our best wishes for the season. Congratulations also to Andy who won the Hillamsland his third time now and we wish him well on the Amateur circuit.
