Knighton Heath Golf Club

Tony Coles - 2017 Seniors Amateur Champion

The County Seniors Championship got under way on one of the hottest afternoons of the year at a very well presented Knighton Heath Golf Course.  After a few fall out’s we had 58 start the Championship bidding to become this year’s Champion lifting the Silver Medal and going forward to the National Championship at Woodhall Spa later this year.

The first round with the heat and bouncy fairways proved a great test for the players with scoring proving difficult.  Tony Coles Ashley Wood had the best score of the day with a two over 72.  He was three clear of home player Rob Dilkes on 75 with Steve Gibbons Yeovil and Terry Falck DG&CC a further shot back on 76.

Pete Humphrey led the pack for the handicap Championship with a fine one under par net 69 one shot clear of Rob Dilkes, Martyn Hastings, Charlie McIntyre Came Down and Yeovil’s Gordon Kelleher.

So with the start sheet duly flipped so they were going out in score order for the second round and thankfully the sun had abated and it wasn’t as hot as yesterday.   We had four players pull out and generally scoring was slightly better for some.   Dave Barton after a disappointing 78 had a two over 72 for a 150 total Rob Dilkes could not maintain his form from the first day and was four worse with a 79 and a 154 total.  This just left us to see how Tony faired and he was still playing great golf and came home in 73 for a 145 total five clear of the field to become the 2017 Senior Amateur Champion many congratulations to Tony who will go forward now to the Champion of Champions at Woodhall Spa.

Martyn Hasting 2017 Seniors Handicap ChampionThe battle for the Handicap Championship went on sadly Pete Humphrey the first round leader slipped out of contention as he struggled today having a net 79.  Henryk Kalpak held the clubhouse lead for a long on 143 but the best net round of the final day went to Came Downs Martyn Hastings who had a net 3 under par 67 for a 137 total taking the Championship by four shots from Knighton’s Graham Taylor who finished on a 141 total.  Congratulations to Martin on becoming the 2107 Seniors Handicap Champion.
