DORSET OPEN 2016Andy Rideout Dorset Open Champion

Champion: Andy Rideout Broadstone GC

Hillamsland Trophy: Andy Rideout Broadstone GC

Well there were no weather issues for this year’s Dorset Open it was dry!  There however was a stiff breeze which was a cold one and this proved a considerable test for the players.  It was a great entry with 72 players which included last year’s Hillamsland winner but no Luke Joy this year to defend his win last year.  In fact it was a disappointing turn out by the Professionals with only 6 playing.

The first round saw some good golf played with Jon Bevan (Professional) and Brad Cox Broadstone sharing the lead on one under par 70.  Andy Rideout Broadstone leading had a fine 72 top share third slot with Mike Watson and Mark Wiggett.  Robbie Mabb back playing proved he had lost none of his skills with a fine 73.  So with only 5 shots separating the top 15 places it was all to play for in the afternoon round.

The second round got under way once the players had been fed and watered and the wind seemed to get slightly stronger so the competition was still wide open.  George Carroll produced a fine 72 to move himself up the leader board.  David Cook had a level par round of 71 5 better than the morning moving him into contention.  Mike Watson and Mark Wiggett struggled having 75 & 76 respectively Andy Rideout kept his cool again producing another fine round of 72 to put him in top spot on 144 one clear of Robbie Mabb on 145 and morning leader Jon Bevan who could only manage a 75 afternoon round.  The round of the day belonged to Professional Kieron Fowler who after the mornings round of 76 went round the second time in a stunning 3 under par 68 to put him on 144 and tied with Andy Rideout.  So it was then back to the tee for the playoff which was to be played over holes 1, 2 & 9 after which if still tied it would go to sudden death.  Both parred the first and then Andy parred the second with Kieron only managing a four and when Andy sunk his par putt on the ninth it was all over winning the playoff by two shots.  So only for the second time we have an Amateur holding both trophies congratulations to Andy who also retained the Hillamsland Trophy which he won last year as the top Amateur.
