The 2015 South West Boys Championships was played at Teignmouth Golf Club, Devon, a course notorious for its ups and downs and quirky holes. Representative teams were offered from Dorset, Devon, Cornwall, Gloucestershire, Wiltshire and Somerset.
A practice round preceded the main competition day, and with virtually all boys having already visited the course prior, we had the great benefit of professional Dan Frost in attendance.
With an early start on competition day, the weather was aweful with heavy downpours and when the rain stopped it became blustery with strong gusts and it became quickly apparent that the course setup was going to be tough going for the entire field. As the morning rounds completed on the final greens, somewhat despondent faces became slightly cheerier once they saw how their scores faired against others in the field. On conclusion of the morning session, a mere 10 points separated our boys from wiltshire who once more were leading the pack, with Dorset’s Tom Plumb on 72 in second place one behind Wiltshires Tom Stagg. George Carroll posted a 75 with Brad Cox on 76. Our boys would have to play well in the afternoon to turn around the 10 shots but given the conditions anything was possible. The competition remained wide open.
A disappointing and tough afternoon for all our boys with the best score being 77 posted by David Lyon Tom Plumb and Tom Atkins and with Wiltshire coming in some 14 shots better than us we were again left as Runners up behind them for the second year running.
