Seniors Championship Mike Chapman SW Seniors Champion

Filton GC 24 – 25 JULY 2014

Captains Report:

The new SWCGA Seniors Champion comes from Dorset

This year’s championship was held at Filton Golf Club over 36 holes on July 25 and 26th. Mike Chapman from The Dorset Golf & Country Club scored the best round of the final day, adding a 71 to his first round score of 73. His total of 144 beat SWCGA veteran, Roger Searle by 4 shots to win the championship and helped Dorset to third place of the 6 counties. Well done Mike.
Dorset players have a good record in this competition with John Gordon, Campbell Boal and David Lock winning the championship in recent years. Mike’s win this year is particularly pleasing because he is such a strong supporter and member of the Dorset Seniors team.
The winning county was Gloucester who beat Cornwall by just the one shot. Dorset were a further 16 shots behind in third place. We took eight people to the Championship of which 6 were nominated to count. If we were able to choose our six best scores we still would have been 12 shots behind Devon.  On the day, there were two counties who were better than us.
The weather was very hot and the course was dry and bouncy. There were a number of Filton GC entrants and even they found it difficult. One of them carded a 92 in the first round. Only 34 of the 72 entrants scored better than 160 for the two rounds. CSS for the first day was 72 and for the second day 73 (reductions only) That would be Mike then.
