Seniors Championship

EAST DEVON GC 26 – 27 JULY 2012

The South West Seniors Championship was hosted this year by by Devon at East Devon Golf Club which, despite the heatwave was in excellent condition although with a stiff breeze on both days the hard, bouncy course proved to be a real test for the players with no sub-par round on either day. John Gordon had a tremendous 74 on the first day to lead the Individual Championship and a second round 76 left him in a two way tie for the championship with Colin Ross from Cornwall sadly for John Colin won on the second play off hole. Everyone was full of praise for the condition of the greens which were fast and true. Devon qualified for the English Seniors' County Championship despite one of their team having to withdraw injured from the second round.

This success meant Devon have done the triple as they have also qualified for the Boys' and Men's County Championships

Congratulations to Graham Taylor who won the over 70's gross yet again!

Captains Report:

The course was even more brown and fast running than when we played Devon earlier in July.  The greens were the same pace as any quicker the grass would have been burnt off.  The wind was steady about force 3 but in a completely different direction to our practice round.
There is no need to go into great detail about the two rounds as only one John Gordon out of our team played to his potential.  John led after the first day and ended up in a play-off with Colin Ross of Cornwall.  Unfortunately John lost to a birdie on the second extra hole.  The rest of the team underperformed we were 9 shots behind Gloucestershire and 4 behind Devon after the first day, and we faired slightly better in day two but it was not enough as we ended up 11 shots behind the winners Devon who all shot scores in the mid to high seventies to pip Gloucestershire.
There are some lessons to be learnt from this competition; the most obvious was that the team needs to be more familiar with the venue so perhaps more practice rounds may be required to prepare the team better. There were some other good Dorset results from players who entered individually namely Mike Chapman DG&CC who finished 7th overall.
We can now only look forward to the New Year and better preparation for the next qualifier at Filton GC in Bristol
