This year’s Championship at Came Down has seen two contrasting days in our first attempt we never hit a ball as the mist and cloud failed to lift and we returned to a glorious sunny day with a testing breeze. We did lose a few competitors due to other events and holidays but none the less the championship was played on a great course which proved to be a stern test to our youngsters.
The under 12’s led the way playing a Stableford, it never ceases to amaze just how far these youngsters can hit the ball and it was a pleasure to watch. The star of the show was Alex Elwick Sherborne with 40 points followed by Cameron Laird Knighton Heath on 36 points congratulations to Alex on becoming the 2013 Under 12 Champion.
The under 13 championship was where most pressure was being felt having won the Under 12 championship last year Sam Brooke was now competing for the Under 13 Championship and with an 81 he had a long wait but having earlier had the disappointment of not making the English Under 14 championship (Reid) he was to be crowned Dorset’s Under 13 champion. Joe Taylor this year’s Peter Alliss champion from the IOP took the Handicap top spot beating Dominic Williams on count back by one.
The youngsters from Parkstone are having an exceptional season and it continued with Kieran Stott taking the Under 14 Championship with a fine 79 sadly for one player the dream of winning all age groups came to an end as Ben could only manage 82 as he recovers from a broken wrist, I am sure he will soon be back to full fighting form. Kieran Mulhall from Bridport &WD took the Handicap Champions slot.
The Under 15 Championship was dominated by the two young guns from Ashley Wood with Dominic Dunstan coming out on top with a fine 76 pipping Sam Russell into second place. Alex Stocks took the Handicap Championship by one from local lad Jake Tutton. Looking at this age Ian Davis has a good base to select from for his under 16 squad.
The Under 16 Scratch championship was won by David Lyon from Lyme Regis with a 75 the best gross round of the Championship, team and club mate George Seed took the Handicap Championship.
Our thanks go to Came Down for hosting the event and finding another slot to fit us in as well as the ever impressive starter in our President of Juniors Ian Clark, along with Referee John White from Bridport and Peter Fry who gave his time to ball spot around the course.
It still concerns me even with these numbers that some youngsters are missing out and not entering the Championship, it is a great days golf and allows all the young ones a chance to compete in a County event against their piers let’s hope we get more along next year at Highcliffe Castle GC.
