This year’s championship was played at Tehidy Park GC, a rather lush parkland course lying not far from the coast of SW Cornwall. Although the area had suffered the rain that we had all experienced, remarkably the course showed few signs of it and, indeed, with rain squalls all around the area that day, Tehidy saw only one short shower. Two rounds are played with the best five scores in each round counting towards each county’s scratch total.
Our team comprised Billy-Joe Bugden, Fraser Dawson, Jordan Howlett, Dominic Knight. George Long, Harry Mann, Tom Parsons and Oliver Stocks. Unfortunately Billy-Joe suffered some shoulder damage whilst warming up and, though he played a first round to see how things might go, he was unable to contemplate the 36 holes and sensibly withdrew. The scores for the two rounds were as follows:
Fraser Dawson 75 73 148
George Long 76 73 149
Harry Mann 75 75 150
Dominic Knight 79 76 155
Jordan Howlett 79 81 160
Tom Parsons 81 81 162
Oliver Stocks 87 82 169
In the individual stakes Fraser came 9th, George 11th and Harry 16th. The individual winners were Matthew Pearson (Burnham & Berrow) 139, Harrison Greenberry (Exeter G&CC) 144 and Harry Flower (Woodbury Park) 145. All day there were only four sub-par rounds, the best being 68 by Pearson in the morning.
We came 5th in the team championship with the resulting scores for the best five as shown below:
Devon 368 362 730
Somerset 370 373 743
Wiltshire 377 370 747
Gloucester 373 381 754
Dorset 384 378 762
Cornwall 389 390 779
Our average score per round was five over par compared with Devon’s average of two over par. Every Dorset player playing two shots better per round would have given us second place. I would say that would not have been a lot to ask for! Pleasing to see was the second round play of both Fraser and George in particular, and the steady two rounds from Harry. However once again we tasted disappointment.
Support for the day was excellent with Andy Parsons and Derek Bugden looking after the boys, and the SWCGA President, Ian Clark and Ian Hulse and myself there all day. Thanks to them and thanks to the boys who tried very hard and spared the time from their various examinations to play!
