Dorset U14’s V Wiltshire U14’s

5th May 2024 – Rushmore GC

Dorset under 14’s took on Wiltshire under 14’s in the Jack Roberts League at the beautiful Rushmore Golf Club.

The conditions were going to be a test as the rain showers kept coming in and out and the wind was blowing. Wiltshire are the defending league champions and have been a very strong side for a number of years. The boys knew they were in for a tough day but were all in good spirts and up for the challenge.

The foursomes got underway with Alex Harrison and Dan Pratt leading the boys out as our number one pairing. As to be expected, the morning proved to be a tough affair with our first 2 matches struggling against some extremely good opponents. Matches 3 and 4 however were holding their own with no more than one hole in it at any stage. Eventually best mates Taylor Vizard and Finley Harvey managed a half whilst disappointingly, Callum and Cameron lost the last two holes to be narrowly defeated.

Unfortunately, the afternoon singles got underway in pouring rain. However, this was going to be a great opportunity for our lads to put themselves up against possibly the best players they have faced in a singles scratch match. The boys did themselves proud and although we eventually lost the singles 6-2, all the boys hit some great shots and showed no signs of nerves. Noticeable achievements came from Callum Hall who came from behind to win 2 & 1 and from 16 handicap Cameron Rutland who beat their 8-handicap golfer 4&3!!

So, it turned out to be a defeat, however this group of under 14’s is strong and talented. I’m confident that they will improve quickly and become a strong Dorset outfit over the next few years.

Special thanks go to Declan and Rushmore Golf Club. They were fantastic hosts; the boys and parents really enjoyed the day.
