We played Surrey at St Georges Hill in Weybridge. This is a truly magnificent course presented in excellent condition.
In the morning foursomes the County Champion Tom Robson played with Aaron Crabb who came up against some early birdies eventually losing 4/2. The remaining matches were in a similar pattern, Jon Welch and Robbie Mabb losing 2/1, Giles Legg and Harry Mitchell by 4/3 and John Blanks and Tom Atkins also by 4/3. Surrey played excellent golf mixing very few mistakes with plenty of birdies. We were 4-0 down at lunch.
With a mammoth task on our hands the singles were underway with Tom Robson leading from the front. He played good golf but Surrey were victorious on the 17th green, winning by 2/1.
In the second match Tom Atkins lost the first hole by driving into the trees to go 1 down before finding inspired form with 6 birdies to win 5/4 to stop the Surrey momentum.
Unfortunately the remaining matches all went the way of Surrey as the proved why they are one of the strongest teams in the country. we were left on the wrong end of an 11-1 scoreline.
The team battled hard but it needs to be recognised that Surrey away is a difficult task for anyone. In all of the matches I witnessed, Surrey players were under par on a challenging golf course and they simply were the better side. My thanks go to Surrey for hosting us and to all of the Dorset Supporters to attended and caddied for the players. Thank you to Bill Kennedy the county president and Mr Robson for attending and caddying, this is always most welcome. Also to Mrs Robson and Colin Legg for their support as always.
Finally thank you to Dan Frost for his support and coaching and for caddying for Tom Atkins in the afternoon. I am sorry the result was not better and is in no way reflective of the expert tuition he gives us.
