Dorset faced Somerset in the final game of the 2022 Jack Roberts league at a firm and fast Folke Golf Club. After a competitive match away in Cornwall the week before, the boys were looking forward to getting back out and seeing if they could go one better.

The weather was not kind on the day and the morning foursomes got away in damp, drizzly conditions. All four matches were close early on but only the ever-reliable Harrison/Wheeler pairing managed a win. Clegg and Tolman also gave a good account of themselves but a disappointing bogey on the short par 4 last hole saw them lose 1 down. The morning foursome ended in a 3-1 defeat.

Unfortunately, the rain continued to fall as the afternoon singles began. The two Ollies went out 1st and 2nd hoping to finish their under 14’s careers with a couple of wins. As time went on though it was becoming apparent that Somerset were proving to be the stronger side with their boys edging ahead in a number of matches through 9 holes. Several matches were however still close so the boys were in with a chance if they could shift the momentum. Unfortunately, this was not to be, only Oliver Clegg managed a win with Alfie and Ryan achieving respectable halves.

So the season finished with a disappointing 9-3 defeat. This year has been a big learning curve for much of the team who were experiencing county golf for the first time. Eight of this year’s squad will continue into next season with a couple of the lads young enough to stay much longer. Although the results were not ideal this year, the lads have improved a great deal since last October when we first got together. Next season should prove a lot more successful with the team being far more experienced.
