The Dorset County 1st Team were back to competitive action on Sunday 27th June in a South East League match versus Surrey at Purley Downs. The team selected for the match was:

Thomas Kollberg (Broadstone), Sam Atkins (Parkstone), Bailey Lewendon (Parkstone), Ben Pritchard (Parkstone), Ross Murgatroyd (Ferndown), Sam Alex Johnstone (Broadstone), Andy Robson (Sherborne) and Giles Legg (Ferndown)

Unfortunately, our Captain Andy Rideout had to follow government guidelines and self-isolate, so Vice Captain Andy Robson stepped up to lead the team.

The drama started early with Thomas and Sam arriving with 2 minutes to spare before the first tee. As the match got under way in overcast and windy conditions, the early matches could of gone either way.

Thomas Kollberg started strong for Dorset, despite only hitting 2 balls in the nett and running to the first tee, he played some brilliant golf bringing home the top match to win 4&2. Sam Atkins followed behind with a slightly longer warm up but unfortunately could’ve repeat his friends form losing 3&2. In the 3rd match, Bayley Lewendon suffered a similar fate losing 4&3, but in the 4th, Ben Pritchard managed to grind out a hard-fought match to win 1 up.

At this point Surrey started to take control of the match. Next up saw Ross Murgatroyd make his first appearance for Dorset; hopefully the first of many, but unfortunately it wasn’t a fairy tale debut he would of wanted suffering a 5&4 loss. Alex Johnston, showing real grind after losing 5 of the first 6 holes, fighting back to wo thin touching distance but the comeback ended on 17 losing 3&1. Andy Robson had a back and forth match being A/S through 11, but struggled on the back seven, losing 4 in a row to lose 4 & 3. Giles Legg also had a tight match winning the 16th to go A/S. However a loose second shot on the 17th resulted in some late drama as his ball struck Dorset’s very own Ross deflecting into trouble. He would sadly go on to lose 2 down.

Final Result: Surrey 6 - Dorset 2

A great team effort showing commitment and dedication in making the effort to travel to Croydon for just 18 holes of golf. A thank you must also go to our opponents and the fantastic spirit that the match was played in. The county team now looks forward to its next match against Kent at home, at Came Down on the 1st August.
