The team travelled to Cricket St Thomas in Somerset for our first match of the season and as defending Champions Dorset were keen to get our defence of the Jack Robert’s League off to a good start. With Jeson Bull injured (get well soon Jenson) and Tom Bastow unavailable, it presented an opportunity for squad members to gain their first County cap. Ollie Griffiths, Oscar Thomas, Andy Su and Archie Tolman were all making their debut in the Jack Robert’s League.
The morning foursomes ended all square, with the star performance of the morning coming from Archie Tolman who looked like a seasoned County player playing alongside the experienced Rhys Harrison.
On paper Somerset fielded the stronger team with matches 5 to 8 having their work cut out as Dorset faced opponents with much lower handicaps. It was important that Dorset got off to a good start in the afteroon singles and the boys didn’t disappoint with the top three players going ahead early and never looking in any difficulty. Ollie Griffiths on debut looked comfortable against the big hitting Stanley Richardson and maintained the pressure to secure a 3&2 win. Gus Moxon had a tougher match but fought hard to secure a 2 up win on the 18th, ensuring that Dorset took the first 4 points. Attention now turned to the last four matches as Dorset needed a half to win the overall match. Connor Moore battled hard to stay in this match but Somerset won match 5. Oscar Thomas had a tough baptism into County golf facing the inform Jackon Carey who won match 6 for Somerset. Dorset now needed a minimum of a half from the remaining two matches. Andy Su on debut faced an opponent with a handicap 5 shots lower and played some excellent golf to secure a 2&1 victory and the point needed for Dorset to win the match. That left Archie Tolman unaware of the overall match situation and fighting hard to stay in his match; Archie went 1 down on 15 but won the 18th to halve his match rounding off what was an excellent day for Dorset. Star performances of the day coming from Rhys Harrison, Gus Moxon and Andy Su who all won their morning foursomes and afternoon singles to take maximum points for Dorset.
Thank you to Cricket St Thomas and Somerset for their outstanding hospitaility and to Ian Clake for coming to support the Dorset boys.
