With only a 24 hr turnaround, Dorset were once more back in action to face Cornwall at Bridport & W Dorset. At stake was the Ben Enoch U16 League title – and Dorset were in control of their own fate.
By 9.00am, the putting green, range and short game areas were a hive of activity as the U14 were also playing Cornwall. As the boys prepared, the weather was unbelievably benign for Bridport with the flag on the 18th absolutely motionless.
The foursomes got Dorset off to a flying start and, as the scores indicate, the boys were always in control. Dominic Dunstan had replaced Adam and he quickly slotted in and partnered Tom to a 4&3 win. This set the pattern for the remainder of the matches. The boys played sensible foursomes golf and looked after their partners. It was noticeable, in taking an overview of the matches, that Dorset were generally playing from fairways while Cornwall were often playing from the quite penal rough.
So lunch was again taken sitting on a 4-0 lead. There was time before the singles for a further pep talk from Dan Frost and the opportunity to hit further balls in the range.
The wind got up a little in the afternoon and this heralded a Cornwall revival. Dorset lost the first 2 matches, Brad gained a fine 6&4 win and George C came back well to win on the 17th. A ½ point was still needed before the celebrations could begin and this duly came in match 5 with a 1 up win from Stefan. The strength in depth of the Dorset team was again demonstrated with 3 points coming from the last 4 games to finally give a convincing 9-3 result. Of course this now means that Dorset has won the Ben Enoch Trophy – and for the first time, thus setting the bar that much higher! Congratulations to all the boys and to Team Manager Rob Harris who, unfortunately, could not be present to enjoy the culmination of all his hard work in preparing the boys. Last but not least well done to Dan Frost for the important role he has played in the team’s success.
Thanks again for the on-course support from parents and our President of Juniors. Thanks also to Bridport and their members for allowing the invasion – albeit, of course, by a group of talented and well behaved young men.
