      Final

So with the sun shining the 2016 Final got under way between Matt Walker Came Down and Matthew sandy Sherborne with the County President John White refereeing.  Matt got off to a flying start and after the second was two up having birdied the first two holes.  Matthew stemmed the flow with a par at the next and then got one back at the short fourth hole when Matt failed to make par. Matthew followed that by finding the long fifth in two to get it back all square.  They halved the picturesque drop hole (6th) and when Matt found the rough off the seventh it was Matthew who was now leading by one, which soon became two as he took the next.  They halved the ninth and it was soon three to Matthew when he parred the tenth.  Matt must have had a good talk to himself as he then won the next two holes to pull it back to one.  They then halved the next three holes and Matthew was one up as he came to the sixteenth which had not been his favourite hole of the weekend and he again found the rough on the left with his second into the green and this cost him the hole when he looked favourite when Matt found the rough off the tee so all square.  Matt then had a great birdie at the next to once more take the lead and a great shot onto the left edge of green on the last with Matthew missing right secured him the match and the Championship.  A worthy Champion and a great match to watch well done to both players.

Semi-Finals

Semi Final Matthew Sandy v Tom Lawerence An all Sherborne affair Matthew Sandy v Tom Lawrence with Brain Clark (Lyme Regis) refereeing.  It was a very tight match with only on hole in it at any time throughout the match and when Matthew took the lead by one at seventeen and with both parring the last it was Matthew that was going to the final.
 Matt Walker v Brad Cox

Experience v the young was the order of the first semi and with the wind blowing Matt Walker from Came was favourite against Broadstone’s young gun Brad Cox.  Matt won the first and never lost control after that although he did have some good fortune here and there but ran out winner by 5&4 securing his first County Final.

Last 8 Matches:

Matthew Sandy v Steve Sidney: Steve seemed to be in control of this one but Matt dug deep from being three down to win by one a great tussle and an interesting match to watch.
Tom Lawrence v Joe Turner:  A tight game but Tom's experience came through in the end winning 2&1
Callum Ward v Brad Cox: Two Under 18 team members battled this match out and it went into overtime with Brad winning when Callum over hit his shot into the first extra hole.
Tom Peacock v Matt Walker: Tom with all his experience could not contain Matt and this match finished early with Matt taking a 4&3 win.

Last 16 Matches:

Steve Sidney v Sean Dimmick: Steve was still on a high after becoming the Mid Amateur Champions (Big Mac for short) and always seemed to be in control of this match frunning out winner with a 3&2 scoreline.

Matthew Sandy v Robbie Mabb: Matthew won 4&3 and never let Robbie get into the match.

Joe Turner v Tom Plumb: Under 18 team mates this was a battle and needed an extra hole to decide it and fittingly it was a birdie that saw Joe through by one.
Harry Mitchell v Tom Lawrence: Second seed Harry had a tough match with the Tom looking to emulate his dad and win a gold medal.  He did see off Harry 2&1.
Sonny Wilkinson v Brad Cox:Past Champion Sonny was up against one of our up and coming youngsters Brad and youth prevailed with Brad winning 2&1
Callum Ward v Toby Long:  Callum played very steady to secure a 2&1 victory.
Giles Legg v Matt Walker: Eighteen holes were not enough and it took another three for Matt to eventually win.

Dominic Knight v Tom Peacock:  Tom Peacock won 2&1

Stroke Play Qualifier - Garrett Salver.

The 2016 County Championship was held at Bridport & West Dorset GC who are celebrating their 125th Anniversary and the club went all out to put on a great weekend for the players taking part.  The course looked fantastic and with very little wind and lots of sun it proved to be a great day for golf on a superb and testing course where you could not stray off the fairways and had to plot your way round the greens.   The first round got under way and players found the going tough as was the scoring with some tricky pins to negotiate.  Best of the morning was Dominic Knight from Ferndown with a one over 72 and one back was team mate Harry Mitchell on 73.  Young guns Callum Ward DG&CC, Matt Sandy Sherborne and Broadstone’s Brad Cox were two off the pace on 74 So all to play for in the afternoon and the conditions continued to be great with no wind and sunny intervals.

The second round saw scoring improve considerably as players got to grips with the greens.  Dominic Knight continued to thrive on the course with a great one under par 70 giving him a level par total of 142 keeping him at the top.  Harry Mitchell was out in two under but the birdies deserted him in the final stretch but a great level par round put him in to second spot on a two over 144.  Matt Sandy was in third spot with a 73 in the afternoon.  Callum Ward who took the Under 21 title last year was fighting hard to retain it this year and he did just that with two fine rounds of 74 putting him in 4th place.  Steve Sidney a long support of County Gold had a great one over par round in the afternoon which pushed him up the leader board and secured him the Sika Trophy as the best Mid-Amateur player.  The Garrett Salver went to Ferndown’s Dominic Knight.Garrett Salver winner Dominic Knight Ferndown
