Juniors' Secretary Report

Stroke Play

Dorset came 2nd to Devon by one stroke only!  The total for our best 5 players was +9 compared to Devon’s +11; it was only the last counting score (+7 to +4) that proved crucial.  Dorset’s best scores were fine 71s from the new Henderson Champion, David Lyon and Steffen Foley.

Matchplay

Dorset began the Match play phase with 2 excellent wins against Wiltshire & Somerset.  The final afternoon pitted Dorset against the also unbeaten Devon – unfortunately we came 2nd again just losing 4-3.  The result was as close as the score suggests as Dorset actually won more matches than Devon.  There were some fine individual performances from the Dorset team; Adam Harris & George Carroll won all their matches as did the foursomes pairing of Steffen Foley & Callum Ward.  Tom Atkins faced 2 England players – and took Harry Hall to the 19th and claimed the scalp of Jamie Li (who won the Individual Stroke play title).

Conclusion

This was an excellent 3 days golf.  The behaviour and team spirit displayed by the Dorset team was exemplary and it was a pleasure to be with the boys.  Certainly there will be a few “what ifs”, but to have come so tantalisingly close to winning two titles is more frustrating than disappointing.  Hopefully this experience will give the boys a lot of confidence as we build towards the SW Boys Championship in July.
Many thanks to Dan Frost for his expertise and to Bill Kennedy, President, for all his help in making things run smoothly.
