John Hayes - 2014 Seniors Amateur ChampionJohn Hayes The Ashley Wood

The 2014 Seniors Championship was played at The Ashley Wood GC with the competition being played over two days completing 36 holes of Stroke Play to give us our 2014 Champion.  The course proved to be a great test for all those taking part and then added in was the wind which made scoring difficult.   Last year’s Champion David Barton led the way but found it tough going coming home in 82.  Bob Dilkes back playing after ill health came home with a 79 equalled by Gordon Archer from Sherborne.  Paul Vernam had a 78 and Campbell Boal from Broadstone was one better with 77 but the afternoon belonged to home player John Hayes who off 7 showed the way with a 73 the best round of the day and a lead of 4 for the next round tomorrow morning.  So with the start sheet flipped and the players going out in the previous day result order we got under way with heavy cloud but a little less wind.  The scores were somewhat better that the first day David Barton had a 73 as did Mike chapman from DG&CC.  Campbell Boal slipped to a 79 ending up in fourth place on 156 David Barton was third on 155, Paul Vernam took the club house lead with a 75 giving him a 153 total.  So all eyes were on the eighteenth for leader John who came down and nervously bogied the last but still managed a great round of 73 with 1 birdie four bogies and the rest pars for a total of 146 and the title of County Seniors Champion.  John with a handicap of 7 also secured the handicap Championship with a stunning eight under total of 132 and again Paul Vernam was runner up.  A hearty meal was had by all players followed by the prize presentation.  My thanks to all competitors and it is such a shame more don’t play in this great event.
