Parkstone GC - 01 August 2013

2013 Boys Champion – Sam Roles Came Downy GC

This years Boys Championship got under way at Parkstone with a field of 41 boys all competing to become the County Boys Amateur Champion and with a glorious day and a course in superb condition what more could the players ask for.  To be fair the boys did not disappoint as the scoring proved to be very good and some of the best seen for several years.   With the championship being played over 36 holes it the first round was very keenly contested, players jostled for position and Ferndown’s James Singleton led the way with a 2 under 70.  This was closely followed by Tom Atkins and Sam Roles both with 71’s 1 under par.    George Carroll from DG&CC played well enjoying a good level par finish.  Order of Merit leader Jack Baker was off the pace after four dropped shots in the last five holes.

It was a reasonably short turn around and we were soon into the second round with no cut this year all players were to complete the 36 holes and it seemed scoring got better as the day went on. James Singleton the morning leader could only muster a 76 after a level first nine a double bogey at the tenth set the scene for the final holes. The mighty impressive Tom Atkins had a level round of 72 to remain 1 under with a round of 3 birdies and 3 bogies. George Long who was disappointed with his morning round was 3 under after nine but another bogey on the seventeenth saw him home in 70. Sam Roles continued in fine form and after nine was 1 under and when he birdied sixteen and seventeen he was three under on the last which saw him par the hole to take the overall lead. The best of the day was by Parkstone’s Alex Fernandez who off seven shot a stunning gross 67 which included two very nervous bogies at sixteen and seventeen but a super shot to within two foot at the last for a birdie set him up for a sizable handicap reduction well done Alex. It also put him in second place overall Alex Fernandez Handicap Winnerand ensured the handicap trophy.
