County Seniors Championship 2012

Canford Magna Golf Club 20 -21 June 2012

Colin Short - 2012 Seniors Amateur Champion

The 2012 Seniors Championship was played at Canford Magna GC over two days with the first day having the sun and breeze we got under way.  All players this year were to play both days with both the Champions being decided over the 36 holes along with the age group subsidiary prizes.  The start sheet for the second day would be done in score order from the first day with all those in contention from the first day going out at the back end of the field.  The parkland Course proved to be a very stiff test for the players and scoring was not easy.  Early starter Selwyn Burke Remedy oak came home in 74 and this was never beaten during the rest of the day the next best was Club secretary Nigel Stubbs on 76  with Kevin Peel Remedy and Rhys Francis Parkstone both on 77.  On the Handicap side Selwyn and Nigel continued to lead the way there also but were closely followed by Wilfred Wilshaw and Steve Walton Canford, Mike Welch Knighton and Kevin Peel all on net 71.

So the start sheet was prepared and emailed out for the next day and with over an inch of rain during the night the course was on the damp side but credit to the staff that had it well prepared and again presented beautifully for the last round.  The early starters again found it tough going and the scoring was not easy on good slick greens.  Defending champion David Barton came home with a pair of eighties so he was not retaining the trophy, Rhys Francis with a pair of 77’s and a 144 total took the club house lead but may well rue his double on the sixth and bogey on the last. Colin short was next and having had 77 on the first day had the best round of the day in the second with a 75 and a 144 total taking the lead off Rhys on count back, so we awaited our first round leader Selwyn who had an 80 giving him a 144 total but slipping back into third place on count back o how he will think of the double on the par 5 twelfth.  So Parkstone’s Colin Short is the 2012 County Seniors Amateur Champion with Rhys Francis Runner Up.  As for the handicap championship this went to Canford’s Steve Walton who off a 8 handicap had a net 71 and 72 for a 143 total to win and become the 2012 County Seniors Handicap Champion.Steve walton Canford Magna Handicap Champion
