County Stroke Play Championship 20112011 Stroke Play Champions

Remedy Oak Golf Club 28 August 2011

On an early Sunday morning the Stroke Play Championship got under way at the prestigious Remedy Oak Golf course.  Given all the rain we had endured of the past several days the course was in great condition for the championship and would prove a good test to the players it would also try the official's stamina as we set off early to ensure we could get the players round twice prior to dusk.  It was a full field of 60 with 17 players being unfortunate to miss out due to the ballot.

So County Vice Captain David Cook set the pace with Ferndown’s Sonny Wilkinson, David’s 75 set the early clubhouse lead.  The lead was not over taken until half the field was in and Todd Sothcott Ferndown recorded 74 it was followed in by Patrick Woolmington Bridport also with 74.  The old timer mark Davies also joined them at the top with 74 and towards the end of the field Tom Leech the current County Champion missed out when he had a bogie on the last for a 75.  Jon Welch Weymouth in the last group was playing very well and with a birdie par finish took over the leader board with a one over par 73.  There was a good feel for young Harry Mann from Ferndown who in his 77 total had an ace at the thirteenth.

So we were back out in the afternoon and it became clear time was going to be tight as the tail of the first round were just under 5 hours credit to all the players as they all got on with it in the afternoon to ensure we would be home before we lost the light.

David was again round in 75 to finish on 150.  Scoring in general was better than the first round as players got use to the conditions and greens.  Todd came home in 75 also and took the club house lead on 149.  Patrick Wooolmington slipped up with a 77 but there were good 75’s for Scott Love Lyme Regis, Dan Clark Canford, Steve Sidney Queens, Nigel Knight Ferndown and Andrew Day Broadstone.  In the third from last group out Tom Robson Weymouth was having a great round which ended on the last with a great birdie to finish on 68 four under par, this included a bogie at seventeen an eagle at the par four sixth and birdies at the second and eleventh.  It was also a new course record and put Tom into the overall lead by one on 148.  As news came filtering back Jon had bogied the seventeenth it was all up the air as to which Weymouth player would come out on top?  A great drive down the last left Jon with a clear view of the green and he fired his second on to the green past the flag and spun it back several feet the putt just missed but it secured a par and the championship with a 74 for a total of 147.  So it was Jon taking the Parkstone Cup a great double for Weymouth with Tom securing the Weymouth Cup.

With the Garrett Salver winner Daniel Bishop not taking part today it meant the Donald Holmes Trophy was back in contention for several players David Cook had is hands on the trophy for the best part of the day on a 290 total but Jon Welch equalled that and so with the better back 36 hole total he also took the Donald Holmes Championship Cup. So it was a clean sweep of trophies for Weymouth Golf Club
